Billy had barely turned three when he fell sick again while Daddy was off traveling. Uncle Marvin Garrett took us to Ogbomosho and told Mother she should stay in Ogbomosho until the doctors made Billy well. If they couldn’t do that, he said, she should take him to Dr. I.N. Patterson, head of the mission, and say that she would take him home to the States where something could be done for him. Uncle Marvin had done a lab test and could see Billy’s amoeba still thriving. He was losing patience with the doctors. When we arrived in Ogbomosho, the doctor gave little sign of caring about him at all. “If it were I,” Uncle Marvin said, “I would turn around right now and go back home. I’ll take you to the English doctor in Abeokuta.” He told Mother if they fooled around and let the amoeba get into Billy’s liver, Billy would be an invalid the rest of his life. Mother did not take his advice, and the Ogbomosho doctor started a new round of medication with plans for another course every few months.
